Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill just declared she will not give her vote to Judge Gorsuch. Senator McCaskill’s announcement just made it considerably harder to acquire 60 votes.
McCaskill posted this on Medium.com:
“This is a truly challenging decision for me. I am not at ease with both choices. Even though I have made a decision that I can’t back Neil Gorsuch’s nomination for the Supreme Court – and will say NO on the procedural vote and confirmation – I continue to be extremely concerned about our polarized politics and what awaits us in the future, since I’m sure that we will have a Senate rule change that will bring in more extreme judges in the long term.
I cannot help support Judge Gorsuch simply because a study of his opinions uncovers a rigid ideology that constantly puts the little guy underneath the boot of corporations. He is incredibly evasive, but his body of work is not.
Whether or not it is a freezing truck driver or an autistic child, he has demonstrated an unbelievable lack of humanity. And you’d expect something else from an activist – for example, writing a dissent on a case that had been settled, in what seems to be an effort to audition for his present nomination.”
