LOS ANGELES — Cuba Gooding Sr., the father of an Oscar-winning actor and a chart-topping R&B singer in his own right, was found dead in his car in Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon, according to multiple law enforcement sources.
Gooding was found slumped over in his silver Jaguar, parked on Ventura Blvd in Woodland Hills, CA. We’re told the fire department responded to the scene at 12:58 PM PT and attempted CPR, but could not resuscitate him.
Police reportedly found empty booze containers in the car, and suspect that he died from an overdose.
Cuba Sr. was the lead singer of the ’70s soul group The Main Ingredient, which had a huge hit in 1972 with “Everybody Plays the Fool.”
Gooding Jr. spoke of his father during an episode of Inside the Actors Studio that aired earlier this year.
“I remember, one of my earliest memories … he would perform at Disneyland, and after his performances, they would close it off to the general public and all the performers’ kids would go on the rides as many times as they’d want,” Cuba remembered. “He would pull me up on stage with him and make me finish the song because I’d seen him perform all the time. It was a lot of feeling like, ’I come from royalty.’”
He and his wife, Shirley, had 4 children together — including actors Cuba and Omar. They split up in 1974, but remarried in 1995.
Cuba was 72.
Rest in peace bro and thanks for the memories.
Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends.
