Embattled conservative news network Fox News has seem no shortage of turmoil in the past two years, with the ouster and death of its longtime chairman Roger Ailes, and with the departure of numerous high profile hosts, including Andrea Tantaros, Megyn Kelly and, of course, Bill O’Reilly.
Unfortunately, the turnover keeps happening at Fox News, which is in the middle of a shake-up orchestrated by liberal-minded 21st Century Fox CEO James Murdoch. According to reports, another popular Fox News host was just fired.
Fox News put out a statement to Variety magazine that said, bluntly, “Bob Beckel was terminated today for making an insensitive remark to an African-American employee.” The employee, who is an IT worker, is part of a class action lawsuit against Fox News over claimed racial discrimination. The lawsuit alleges that Beckel walked out of his office because the IT worker was black.
Claims the IT worker’s attorneys Douglas H. Wigdor and Jeanne Christensen, “To make matters worse, after our client lodged a complaint about Mr. Beckel’s racist behavior, Mr. Beckel, in front of Chief Human Resource Officer Kevin Lord, attempted to intimidate our client and persuade him to withdraw his complaint. Because he would not do so, Fox, in what has now become commonplace, leaked the story on a Friday to minimize the attention drawn to Mr. Beckel’s racist behavior.”
A spokesperson for Fox News shut down the lawyers’ statement, saying, “As Mr. Wigdor knows, Fox News made the decision to terminate Mr. Beckel after a prompt and thorough investigation. His client raised the complaint to Kevin Lord, EVP Human Resources, on Tuesday evening via email and within 7 minutes Mr. Lord responded and began the investigation. Today, Fox News delivered that message to Mr. Beckel and facilitated an apology from Mr. Beckel to the employee minutes after he was terminated. No one tried to persuade Mr. Wigdor’s client to withdraw his complaint.” Do you think Beckel should have been fired, or is this political correctness gone too far?
